What is a Timestamp?

Short answer

A timestamp links a word to the exact moment in the recording it was typed. Tap any timestamp to play the audio from that point; touch and hold one to edit or remove it.

A time stamp is a point in time that connects the word you type to your recording, marking the moment in your audio where every note is taken. Tap or click a time stamp to jump straight to that important interview question or key concept in the recording.

Edit or Remove Timestamps

A timestamp can land a few seconds after the moment worth marking. Here is how to move it back into place.

  1. Touch and hold the timestamp (right-click on Mac).
  2. Change the time and tap ✓, or tap 🗑 to remove it.

To keep timestamps aligned on future recordings, set Time tag offset. See Adjust Time Offset below.

Turn On or Off Timestamps

Sometimes you might want to focus only on note-taking, in which case you can turn off timestamps and hide the gutter to give you more space to work on.

iPhone and iPad

  • In a note: tap ⋯ → Settings, then turn off Always show time stamps.
  • For all notes: go to Settings → General and turn off Always show time stamps.

macOS

  1. Open Settings.
  2. In the General tab, locate ‘Note editor’ and untick ‘Show time stamps’.

Adjust Time Offset

You may not always be quick enough to jot down an important piece of information when it comes up, and that’s when Time Offset comes in handy. It sets how far back in the recording a note is indexed when you type it, so you’re not constantly trying to keep up.

  • iPhone and iPad: Settings → Record & Playback → Time tag offset
  • macOS: Settings → Record → Time tag offset

Retain Timestamps When Deleting Recordings

You can remove an audio or video recording without losing the timestamps. When you remove a recording from a note, turn off Also remove timestamps. This is currently available on iPhone and iPad only.
